A boy to the core

Carsten is our little man in a boy’s body. He’s all boy, lover of trucks and trains, balls and cars, climber of furniture and master of brute strength. But he also has a sensitive side and is the best giver of hugs, cuddles and kisses.

It was so sweet to hear Carsten say, “I want to marry you, Mommy.” He’s been saying it very often, actually, and it just melts your heart. I had to explain to Carsten that he must find someone else to marry when he’s older, and that I hope he chooses someone kind, intelligent, and thoughtful. But not for a long, long time. Until then, I’ll gladly take all the love.

The whole experience was quite new for him; it was a preschool-like setting, so he was away from us for a morning (or the full day, on the last day of our trip), but he had a blast! He was so enthusiastic about making pizza wedges and french fries with his skis, and riding the Magic Carpet up the hill. Carsten also had fun ice skating. Each morning, on our way out, he would see Santa in the lobby and tell him about all his adventures!

With trains. He loves Thomas, James, and all his pals from the Island of Sodor. But when Tom set up the Christmas train around the Christmas tree, he was entranced. From the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to bed, he is parked under the Christmas tree, running the train around and around its track. We can barely get him to eat or go outside!

He enjoyed way too much candy, well earned by a long walk around the neighborhood, running to catch up with his big sister and friends, while carrying his heavy load of precious candy, and remembering his “Happy Halloween’s!” and “Thank you’s!” His little costume was so much fun, and even his head lamp really worked (great for keeping track of him in the dark). Now the challenge will be deciding what to do with all the loot.

When we were changing him one morning, Carsten started talking about “Bawack Obama and John M’Cain.” We responded, “oh yes, Barack Obama should be President, right Carsten?” and he replied quite emphatically, “NO! John McCain!” Thinking it was a fluke, we tried again: “Carsten, say Barack Obama. We want Barack Obama to win.” Carsten was firm. “No Obama. John McCain!”<br/>Thank goodness he is not yet old enough to vote.
